My name is Elly, and I was born in a small Polish town that looks like nothing more than a tiny dot on the map between Wrocaw and the forests of Lower Silesia. Our town is the kind of place where people still greet each other on the streets, where the wind carries the smell of freshly baked bread across the market square, and where every stranger sparks a quiet curiosity.

When I was little, I thought the town was a small, separate universe that contained everything the world could possibly offer: the old town hall with its clock, the shimmering ribbon of the river where reflections always drifted by, and the abandoned brick factory on the outskirtsour gloomy castle, where my friends and I staged our childhood adventures.

My parents were very simple people. My mother worked as a librarian and always smelled of the dust of old books, and my father repaired bicycles and seemed able to fix anything that existed in the world. He always said that things break not because theyre tired, but because people forget to use them. I truly understood the meaning of those words only years laterwhen I realized they applied to people as well.

During that period of my life, someone appeared who became both an important and painful milestone for meMarek. Tall, confident to the point of arrogance, he was a photographer with a dream of traveling the world, but with a perpetual lack of money and patience. We met at a local city event: I was conducting an interview, he was taking photos, and during a break he offered me coffee from a vending machine that smelled more like plastic than actual coffee.

We were together for two years. It was a relationship in which I first learned that love can feel like running across rugged terrain: beautiful, but utterly exhausting. Marek lived through emotions, sudden decisions, and spontaneous night trips to nearby towns just because he felt like it. I, on the other hand, preferred order, calm, and at least some sort of plan for tomorrow.

We broke up just as quickly as we came together. Marek got an opportunity to spend six months in Iceland for an internship, and I realized I didnt want to be the person someones dream depended on. He didnt want to wait, and I couldnt drop everything to travel into the unknown. We hugged on a dark street near the railway station, and that was the last thing I ever knew of him.
