A few years ago, during a presidential campaign whose noise seemed to fill every newspaper and every conversation, I heard the name Ivn Cepeda mentioned. It was not in a debate or a public square. It was at a small gathering, among people discussing politics with that mixture of passion and weariness that national affairs so often produce.
Someone said. What is curious about Cepeda is that his entire life seems to be explained by a tragedy. The observation struck me as reasonable. Like any moderately informed Colombian, I knew the story of his father, Manuel Cepeda Vargas, who was who was killed in 1994. I also knew that the crime belonged to a dark period in which thousands of members of the Patriotic Union were persecuted and exterminated. What I did not know was the extent to which that event had shaped the sons life.
Driven by a curiosity that was not entirely political, I began gathering memories and testimonies. I learned that he had studied philosophy in Bulgaria. I learned that he had returned to Colombia to teach. I learned that his fathers death had pushed him toward defending victims and pursuing peace with relentless determination. I learned that he had spent entire years listening to the stories of displaced farmers, mothers searching for disappeared relatives, and families marked by violence.
All of this was well known. What intrigued me came afterward. A former congressman spoke to me about Cepeda during a dinner in Bogot. He recalled long legislative debates and initiatives concerning victims, reparations, and reconciliation. He described him as a prudent man, even when arguing with his fiercest adversaries. Yet when he mentioned the name of the butcher, the tone of the conversation changed.
That is the real Cepeda, he said. Everything else is secondary. I interpreted those words as an involuntary confession. I thought that the tragedy of his youth had eventually turned into a form of political resentment. I believed I had discovered a hidden key to his biography. For weeks I accepted that explanation. It was simple, human, and plausible. But a new testimony came along to challenge it. Months later, I spoke with a woman who had worked with victims of the conflict and who had known Cepeda for years. I asked her whether she considered him a man dominated by resentment.
She looked at me with surprise. No, she replied. What is unusual is precisely the opposite. Her answer puzzled me. I reminded her of his his father's assassination. I reminded her of the decades of political confrontation. I reminded her of the accusations, the legal proceedings, and the endless public disputes.
The woman smiled. Precisely because of that. She added nothing more. For a long time, I did not understand the meaning of that remark. I understood it years later. By then, I had gathered enough testimonies to notice a contradiction. Cepedas opponents described him as stubborn. His allies described him as persistent. Some considered him ideological; others, conciliatory. They disagreed about almost everything.
But there was one point on which they coincided, almost unintentionally. No one managed to describe him as a man consumed by hatred. That struck me as extraordinary. Not because hatred is admirable, but because it would have been entirely understandable. Life had given him every reason to cultivate it, and yet he seemed to have chosen another path.
Now I will imagine possible explanations. The first is the simplest. I thought that Cepeda had learned to conceal his resentment beneath the forms of courtesy and discipline. The second was more complex. I supposed that he had transformed his pain into a political cause, redirecting a private wound into a collective struggle. Neither explanation satisfied me.
The third, which for a long time I rejected as nave, eventually seemed to me the true one. I imagine it this way. When he lost his father, Ivn understood something that most men take an entire lifetime to understand, if they ever do. He understood that suffering can either multiply itself or be transformed.
Those who have been wounded can wound. Those who have been humiliated can humiliate. Those who have been persecuted can persecute. Human history offers countless examples. But there is another possibility. To turn a wound into understanding. To turn pain into service. To turn loss into compassion. Not because crimes should be forgotten. Not because justice is unnecessary. Rather, because those who harm others often act out of fear, ignorance, or an inability to recognize the humanity of another person. Understanding this does not absolve anyone, but it prevents the victim from becoming a reflection of the executioner.
I believe that Cepedas entire public life can be read as the consequence of that revelation. It was not the pursuit of a victory over his enemies. It was the pursuit of a victory over himself. Over the temptation of resentment. Over the temptation to return to the world the same pain he had received.
Perhaps I am mistaken. Perhaps memory has simplified the facts. Perhaps the years have retrospectively reshaped a story that was once more complex. I am not certain. I even suspect that every person ends up partly inventing the people they admire or oppose. But if I have understood anything from this story, it is that there are those who suffer and pass their suffering on, and there are those who suffer and transform it. The first is common; the second seems like a miracle.
