Marlborough is the region that made sauvignon blanc a global word and it has been rewarded with the sunniest mainland climate in the country and a wine industry that now dominates the national export. Blenheim is the plain-and-vineyard town where the whole thing is grown, Picton is the small port where the ferries from Wellington arrive and the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds — the drowned river valleys that make up a fifth of the country's coastline and that are reached by boat or by the Queen Charlotte Track along the ridge. The mussel farms in the Sounds supply a genuine share of the world's greenshell mussels.

The region's character is wine and water, genuinely sunny and quietly prosperous, with the Sounds providing the sailing, the kayaking and the fishing that the wine money goes into. The population is small and the landscape is the point.

Expect real wine talk, genuine sailing content, and a region where the coastline is more water than land.
