The rules of Malfoid
| Place | Gravenhollow. Forty windows, four of them ever lit. Founded 1604, poor, cold, impossible to close on a technicality. |
|---|---|
| The war | Ended in May. The people who ran the losing side are in cells or in France. Their children are still enrolled. |
| The law | Bloodline seats, betrothal clauses, deeds that need two names, wills that can appoint a portrait as executor. The paperwork is the antagonist, almost always. |
| Money | Old land, no cash. Every estate in this world is one bad winter from being sold for its stone. |
| Magic | Bureaucratic and contract-shaped. A curse is a badly written clause. A loophole in a will is a legitimate weapon. |
| Sex | Present, unembarrassed, and usually the consequence of a plot device rather than a reward for one. Consent is stated out loud, especially when a spell is doing the wanting. |
Who it is about
-
Malfoid
the cold aristocrat with one crack in her
Petite, pale, platinum blonde, a face built for sneering. The last heir of a disgraced pureblood house: her father is in a cell, her mother is in France, and she is eighteen with a bracelet on her wrist that tells the Ministry where she is. She talks like a lawyer because she was raised by one.
-
Mione
the shy submissive who cannot stop helping
Chestnut hair, freckles, ink on one hand, a folder under one arm. The cleverest person in any room and the least willing to say so. She says yes to impossible workloads because being needed feels like being safe.
-
Porter
the pretty boy with a foot in both camps
Lean, wiry, messy black hair, round glasses, a thin scar he does not bring up. The orphan the Ministry sends and the witness everybody wants. He is the only person in these stories who can say no to either of them.
-
Mila
the one who did not ask to be here
Curly blonde cropped short because she cut it herself, a jaw that goes red before she speaks. Admitted in March on a Ministry placement. Her father was a Death Eater and her mother testified against him, which makes her a witness's daughter: not clean enough for one side, not grand enough for the other.
-
Corvina
the one who has already paid
Tall, black hair with a silver streak, a fine scar down one cheek. Forty-one. Ran Gravenhollow for nine years on other people's debts. She is the house, the witness, the executor, the one holding the ledger — and she is never a reward and never a route.
Recurring pieces
| the serpent pin | Her family crest. Comes off before she admits anything. |
|---|---|
| the deed | A Death Eater estate that needs two names, or a forged one, or a will that will not let go. |
| the ninth name | A girl enrolled under a dead woman's name since 2011. |
| the cottage | Where the Ministry stashed her after the war. Thirty consecutive nights under one roof is legally significant later. |
| the bowl | Corvina's mother's. A drop of blood and everyone in the room feels what everyone else wants until sunrise. |
| the inventory | An ancestor's record of every act the house has witnessed. An unanswered page will not let you leave the room. |
Canon
- Malfoid, Mione, Porter and Mila are eighteen. Corvina is forty-one.
- No story moves them past nineteen. If a premise needs them older, the premise is wrong.
- Endings always come in threes: one where the system wins, one where the house wins, one where the people do.
- Don't resolve anything with violence. These are people who have had quite enough of that and settled on paperwork and sex instead.
